How You Do Anything is How You Do Everything: The Power of Daily Habits in Leadership

By Dana Cummings

Recently, I had the privilege of serving on a panel for Aspire Johnson County’s W.I.L.D. series—Women in Leadership Development—where I joined three incredible women to share stories about our journeys in leadership. With an audience of about 50 women gathered over appetizers and drinks, we explored what it takes to lead effectively, both in big moments and in the quieter, daily rhythms of life.

One of the questions we were asked was, “What daily habits or routines help you stay focused and effective as a leader?” It’s a question that got me reflecting on something I’ve come to believe deeply: how you do anything is how you do everything. Leadership doesn’t just happen on the big stages or in the high-stakes meetings; it happens in the tiny moments we choose to show up, care for ourselves, and stay grounded.

For me, a few small, daily practices have made a big difference:

  • I savor my morning cup of coffee
  • I eat dinner with my family as often as I can
  • I exercise
  • I try to get plenty of sleep
  • I don’t doom scroll

Each of these habits may seem simple, but they shape my mindset, energy, and ability to lead with clarity. I find joy in the quiet moments—like that first sip of coffee before the day gets rolling—and strength in the time I spend with my family. Our dinners together are precious, a chance to reconnect and remember what matters most. And while I’m far from a “gym rat,” I’ve learned that moving my body a few times a week makes me feel stronger and more resilient.

Perhaps most importantly, I’ve learned to resist the temptation of endless scrolling. (For crying out loud, don’t doom scroll!) Protecting my focus and peace of mind is essential to being the kind of leader—and person—I strive to be.

Ultimately, leadership is built in these daily choices. It’s about knowing yourself and finding the habits that allow you to be your best self, day after day. Because how you do the small things truly is how you do everything.
